Solar energy has been around for centuries as a source of light and heat. Solar energy is produced by sun rays that reach the Earth. There are different types of solar collectors that are currently being used to meet different energy needs. Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity. Concentrating solar power systems focus sunlight with mirrors to create a high-intensity heat source. Solar power plants are several solar panels that are connected to a generator to produce electricity. The benefit to using solar energy is that it doesn’t produce any pollutants in the air. The drawback is that solar energy panels cost a lot of money. Another drawback is that not many places in the United States don’t get very much sunlight on an average day.
Day #5
Day five should explain how solar energy is produced, as well as explain where solar energy sources can be found in the United States. Day five should also explain what the positives and negatives of solar energy. Students will have the opportunity to use books, handouts, websites, videos, articles, maps of the united states, the alternative energy worksheet, and strategic and future thinking to answer if solar energy is best for Arizona.
