Wind energy has been used for hundreds of years. Wind energy has been used for pumping water or grinding grain, but in recent years wind energy has also been used to generate electricity. The technology to produce wind energy has evolved over the years. We start out using windmills, but now we are using wind turbines. Wind energy is produced by wind moving blades on the turbines to spin a generator that produces energy. Good sites for wind turbines are the tops of smooth, rounded hills, open plains or shorelines, and mountain gaps that produce wind funneling. the western United States, the Appalachians, and Alaska have the strongest winds in the United States.
Day # 3
Day three should explain how wind energy is produced, as well as where the source of energy can be found and consumed in the U.S. Day two should explain the positives and negatives of using wind energy. Students could look at Arizona’s climate to see how wind does Arizona get yearly. Students could also do the Alternative Energy Worksheet to help them record their finding about geothermal energy. Another activity students could do is to make a WIND MACHINE to see how we use a wind turbine to produce electricity from the wind. At the end of the third day students should be able to explain whether or not wind energy is best for Arizona.
